7 Famous Architectural Wonders of China

China holds a vast range of architectures famous for their design and architectural engineering. Here’s a list of some famous architectural wonders in China:

    1. Great Wall of China

China Wall is a top-ranked tourist destination of China which is also a wonder of the world. It is a defensive structure built to protect China from intruders. Its construction started in 5th century BC and lasted for centuries. It has a total length of about 8851.5 km. It stretches from Jiayuguan Pass in the west to Shanhaiguan Pass in the east.

    2. Forbidden City

Forbidden City also known as Imperial Palace Museum is situated at the heart of Beijing. It was built in Yongle period during Ming Dynasty as a symbol of imperial power. It is world’s largest wooden complex which is well preserved. This traditional Chinese architecture marks the status of emperor then. It became a World Heritage Site in 1987.



    3. Temple of Heaven

Also known as the Altar of Heaven, the Temple of Heaven was originally built in 1420 during Ming dynasty. This temple was constructed to offer sacrifices to the Heaven by emperors and pray for harvest. Covering an area of 2.7 million square meters, it is the largest sacrificing temple in China.

    4. Bird’s Nest

Beijing National Stadium is also known as Bird’s Nest situated in the Olympic Green of Beijing. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, athletic events, and football final in 2008 summer Olympics from 8th to 24th August 2008. It was designed by Swiss architecture firm to look like a nest and hence is the name.

    5. Shanghai World Financial Center

Shanghai world financial center is located in Pudong district of Shanghai. It is a mixed-use building consisting of offices, hotels, conference rooms, observation decks and shopping malls. With 492 meters in height, it is listed in the tallest buildings of the world. The top of the building has a trapezoidal shape giving a look of bottle opener. The building has three observatory decks. The first one is at 94th floor. The second one is at 97th floor and it is named as observatory bridge. The last one is at 100th floor.



    6. Three Gorgeous Dams 

Three gorgeous dams is the largest hydroelectric project in the world situated in Sandouping town. It is about 2335 meters long, 18 meters wide and 130 meters wide at bottom. With a 600 km long reservoir, it has a capacity of 39.9 billion cubic meters.

    7. Hangzhou Bay Bridge

Hangzhou Bay Bridge is one of the longest cross-ocean bridge in the world with a span of 36 kilometers. This bridge is built to shorten the travel length between Ningbo and Shanghai from 400 km to 280 km. It has six lanes with a two direction design.
